The Details: Typically, a system jacket consists of two pieces: a weather-resistant outer shell and an insulated inner shell that functions like a liner. Sometimes you’ll see them called “3-in-1” jackets, because you can wear the inner or outer shell alone or put them together for extreme weather protection. #2: Insulated jackets work well in moderately cold temperatures where a system jacket isn’t necessary.

The Details: Unlike a system jacket, an insulated jacket includes an inner liner that can’t be removed. Some might be lined with fleece while others contain 100% polyester PolyFill, which feels lighter than fleece but does an excellent job at providing warmth. Just remember that you can always layer up on colder days, so you might not need a heavy liner. Budget: Good insulated jackets run from $50-$100, depending on the lining, how the seams are sealed, and the waterproof rating.

#3: For milder climates, go with a fleece or soft shell jacket.

The Details: For milder temperatures, opt for a full zip fleece or soft shell jacket to keep you warm. When you’re looking at fleece, look at the weight (10 oz. is considered midweight.) If you need protection from wind, water AND cold, go for a lightweight soft shell. Budget: If you’re on a tight budget, a lightweight fleece or softshell jacket is  your best bet.
